Name: Charlene "Charlie" Bradbury (Note: This is not her actual name but rather the favorite of her aliases. Her real first name is not known in canon, although her last name is, presumably Middleton just like her mother's. Charlie, however, isn't going to go by her real name in any situation, especially on board an alien spaceship.)
Canon: Supernatural
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: Following the events of 'Slumber Party'. (9x04)
Number: Randomize me, bb!
Setting: Supernatural Wiki!
History: Charlie was an only child who had a pretty normal childhood with parents who loved and doted on her. Her mother was a huge fan of the writings of Tolkien and would read The Hobbit to Charlie as a little girl and who introduced her not only to the love of reading, and using your imagination, but also to the magical worlds that she thought existed only in fiction.
At the age of twelve, Charlie went to a slumber party. In the middle of the night, she became scared and called her parents to pick her up. On their way to get her, they were hit by a drunk driver and Charlie's world was forever changed. Her father was killed and her mother suffered severe brain damage which left her in a persistent vegetative state. With no other family to care for her, she was sent to foster care.
Not long after the accident Charlie put to use her computer skills and hacked into a game company's server. She stole their still unfinished game The Red Scare, reprogrammed it to show her flaming liberal views (as she put it), then released it for free. She was subsequently arrested, escaped, and then fled. Adopting an alias combining the first name of a Stephen King character and the last name of a famous science fiction writer, she went on the run. For sixteen years, she went from job to job and relied heavily on her hacking skills to survive. She also would send payments to the hospital where her mother was being cared for, on life support, using various aliases.
Sixteen years later, Charlie had become an IT expert and one of the best, at that. She had friends, although no one she was particularly close to. She spent a lot of time online, too. She also remained completely immersed in the 'sci-fi/fantasy' genre that her mother had loved so much as well. In fact, Charlie even went so far as to get a tattoo of Princess Leia, in a slave girl bikini, astride a 20-sided dice while at ComicCon one year. And, eventually, she was offered a job at Google, as well as a position at Richard Roman Enterprises. She opted for the latter and inadvertently found herself working for the leader of the leviathan. Obviously unaware that the owner of the company was a human-eating monster that had escaped from Purgatory, Charlie continued to do what she always did – buck to authority in small ways that mostly went unnoticed.
Eventually, Dick Roman discovered that Charlie was hacking into corporate websites and making donations to charities in their names. Rather than fire her, or contact the authorities, as she feared, he instead asked her to help him with a problem. He revealed, although not obvious to her at the time, that she possessed a certain 'spark' that prevented others from mimicking her skills and intellectual prowess. He then gave her Frank Deveraux's hard drive and asked her to get past the security protocols to the information contained within.
Charlie ultimately hacked the hard drive in twenty four hours. However, instead of handing the files directly over to Dick Roman, she instead became curious and started snooping. She came across a file labeled 'Richard Roman Enterprises' and discovered all of Frank's information on the Leviathan. At first, Charlie was wholly unbelieving of what she was reading (even claiming she had 'hacked into a loony bin') but eventually realized something freaky was going on after she stumbled across security footage of her boss being eaten by a leviathan.
She immediately rushed home, fully prepared to flee out of terror, and began packing her bags only to be interrupted by Sam and Dean Winchester. Once they convinced her that they weren't leviathan, they enlisted her help. At first she refused but, ultimately, agreed that she had to do the 'right thing'. Thusly, she went back into Richard Roman Enterprises and attempted to gain access to Dick Roman's computer. Coming across a male security guard was almost her undoing because, as a lesbian, she had no understanding how to flirt with a man. Dean assisted her, via an earpiece, and she managed to not only get hold of Dick Roman's emails but even wiped Frank's hard drive completely clean.
Unfortunately, Dick Roman figured out what Charlie was doing and she was detained from leaving the building before the borax bomb that Dean and Sam were having delivered went off. As such, she was stuck inside the building when it locked down and, although she was ultimately saved by Sam, Dean, and the ghost of Bobby Singer, she did break her arm. She then left town and adopted the alias Carrie Heinlein.
Charlie eventually settled down in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and began Live Action Role-Playing (LARPing) in a place known as Moondoor. Eventually she gained enough popularity that she became Queen of one of the four kingdoms within the game. This position, while one she was quite good at, caused her to once again cross paths with Dean and Sam when they arrived to investigate the deaths of two members of the same LARPing community that Charlie was a part of. Reluctant to help at first, once again Charlie agreed to do the right thing and began assisting the boys in their investigation.
In this particular instance, another LARPer had discovered a book that allowed him to summon a fairy to do his bidding. Charlie wound up abducted per his orders but, ultimately, destroyed the book and thus the spell holding the fairy, Gilda, captive. After exchanging in a kiss, Charlie watched the fairy leave and once again returned to her role as Queen of Moondoor. This time, rather than tell Sam and Dean not to contact her again, she instead convinced them to participate in the LARPing battle. They, of course, won.
For a while after that incident, Charlie continued with the life she made for herself. In her spare time, however, she also took to learning all she could about hunting. Eventually, while at the hospital where her mother was being kept alive by life support, she came across a couple of cases and contacted Sam and Dean for their help. Eventually they realized that a djinn is on the loose. However, Charlie wound up captured and, ultimately, trapped in a dream created by her fear while the djinn slowly killed her in the real world.
Using dream root, Dean joined Charlie in her dream and confronted her about her fear of letting her mother die. While in her dream (which resembled the video game she'd hacked into and re-coded as a teen) she finally realized that she had to stop fighting if she wanted to win. Putting down her gun, she woke up just as Sam killed the djinn. Not long after, Charlie went into her mother's room one last time and began to read her The Hobbit just like her mother read to her as a child. Once she finished the book, she turned off the life support machines and effectively said goodbye to that small piece of her past that she had been clinging to for her entire life, as well as the guilt she felt because of it.
After saying goodbye to her mother, Charlie actually settled down a bit. She had her LARPing, a steady job, and also went on two hunts all on her own. In one hunt, she took on a ghost and, in the other, a teenage vampire. While she enjoyed the idea of hunting she found that the reality was far less magical than she'd been expecting. Some time later, she told Sam and Dean as much shortly after arriving at the Men of Letters headquarters to help them try to hack into an ancient computer that belonged in a museum and ran on magic.
While visiting with the boys, during which they watched Game of Thrones and chit-chatted about various things, a bottle that had been knocked over released two souls from within. And that's how Charlie came face to face with none other than Dorothy Baum from The Wizard of Oz fame.
Unfortunately, Dorothy's soul had been trapped in the jar with the Wicked Witch's soul. Although there was no known way to kill the witch, Sam and Dean told Charlie to do some research while they tried to find the escaped baddie. Eventually Charlie figured out that using bullets filled with poppies would slow the witch down and they also learned that the witch was after a key that would unlock a door to anywhere – including Oz.
Charlie paired up with Dean, and they went to his room where he'd last seen the key. While there, the witch arrived and flung green lightning at Dean. Charlie jumped in the way without a second of hesitation and was instantly killed.
Although only dead for a few moments, Charlie found herself in her own personal Heaven, where she was celebrating Christmas with her parents, who were alive again. Then she was brought back to life, courtesy of Ezekiel (even though she doesn't know that part), and proceeded, along with Dorothy, to figure out that using the ruby slippers – which were actually high heels – as weapons would be just as effective on the witch as the poppy bullets, if not possibly deadly. Before they could carry out their plan to track the witch down – who by that point had the key – Sam and Dean, both possessed by the witch, attacked.
Surprisingly, Charlie managed to one-up Dean by kicking him between the legs. She then took the high heels, went after the witch, and killed her just in time to prevent her from summoning her dark forces to take over this world much as they'd done in Oz.
With the witch dispatched, Dorothy announced she was going back to Oz, stating that she had a rebellion to finish. She asked Charlie if she wanted to come along. Charlie, who had spent her entire life wanting a quest of her very own, quickly agreed. She then said goodbye to Sam and Dean and stepped through a doorway, onto the yellow brick road, alongside Dorothy.
And promptly woke up in outer space.
Personality: Although at first glance Charlie seems to be exactly the sort of person you can imagine hacking into corporation websites and being named Queen of a LARPing group, the truth is there is far more to her than meets the eye. Yes, it's true that she loves all things science fiction and fantasy. She's a pop culture guru and can – and does – reference such things seamlessly into her conversations without even thinking about it. It's also true that she is, unquestionably, one of the best computer hackers out there and, really, has a knack for technology in general. It comes as second nature to her as breathing.
However there is much more to her than all of that.
First of all, to truly understand the woman who hasn't gone by her own real name since she was a child, you first have to understand her motivations. The guilt she felt over the car accident that killed her parents caused her to essentially emulate everything they enjoyed. Granted, being 'raised on Tolkien', she likely would have had a deep-seeded love for works of fantasy and science fiction regardless, but that one, life-altering tragedy ensured that she became as deeply immersed in the fantasy realms as she could. To her, it was one way of holding onto her parents, the only way she could feel close with them.
Not only did that accident ensure she would develop a veritable obsession with things such as mystical quests and saving damsels in distress, the destruction of her family and, more importantly, the way the system treated her after the fact, planted a seed of resentment in Charlie's heart toward authority figures. This is an issue she continues to struggle with even to this day. Which isn't to say she can't, or won't, follow directions, or constantly argues with her boss. No, Charlie's ways of handling her issue is much more indirect and typically involves actions that, at times, are downright self sabotaging – such as when she 'took a big old Wikileak' (as she put it) on an employer who was outsourcing and using child labor. Or when she takes funds from the rich corporations and political campaigns and donates them to charities.
Despite her actions often leading to her need to find a new job and, in some cases, start completely over with a new identity, she doesn't stop what she's doing because, to her, she's making a difference and righting at least one small wrong in the world. Just like she doesn't adopt new behaviors, likes, or dislikes when she becomes someone new. She remains the same perky, somewhat geeky, computer hacker girl that she's always been, no matter what. She's an open lesbian, will flirt even in situations where she probably shouldn't, and has a zest for life that refuses to be squelched. She's clearly comfortable in her own skin and has no issue pointing out her own flaws.
Of course, when it comes to flaws, Charlie has her share of them. Aside from her issues with authority, she's neurotic to a ridiculous degree and can be as stubborn as the day is long. She often uses her past as justification for not getting too close to people in the present. She judges people quickly, at times, and has zero tolerance for anyone who goes against her ideals and sense of morality. Yes, she's intelligent but although she doesn't brag about such facts, as some might, she also has no problem making the claim or backing it up if she feels the situation warrants it.
Ultimately, though, Charlie really is just a young woman with a good heart, a quick wit, and a strong desire to make a difference. In a lot of ways, she's a true heroine not because she'll blindly rush into a battle (even though she's done that a few times since meeting the Winchesters) but because she doesn't consider her life any more, or less, important than others and will risk her own safety to help those in need, without question or even a second thought.
Relationships:
Dean
As Dean once put it, Charlie is like the little sister he never wanted. They tease one another, they joke around with each other, and they're honest with each other. He helped her face the pain and guilt over what happened to her parents. His opinion of her clearly matters and she obviously doesn't want to upset him, as made evident when she only grudgingly admitted to having begun hunting on her own. She respects Dean a great deal and would defend him with her last breath. Charlie has literally died for him and would do so again, in a heartbeat (no pun intended), if necessary. He's family to her, plain and simple.
Sam
Although not quite as close with Sam as she is with Dean, Charlie nevertheless also considers him family. She doesn’t necessarily have the same easy camaraderie with him that she has with his brother but they still get along well. In some ways, she's almost more open with him about things than she is with Dean because she doesn’t worry about him judging her as harshly. It's obvious she respects him, though, and she's just as honest with him as she is with Dean. She hasn't died for him (yet) but that doesn't mean she wouldn't if the opportunity presented itself.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Abilities
Charlie is extremely intelligent and one of the best computer hackers in her reality. She's a fast learner, thinks outside of the box when trying to solve a problem, and rarely does she fail when she sets her mind on doing something. She's an excellent shot with a handgun, knows how to use a sword, and, due to her LARPing, has a passing familiarity with weapons typically found in medieval times.
Weaknesses
Charlie is a normal human who can be harmed and killed just like anyone else. Especially when the Winchesters are around. Seriously. She's already gotten between Dean and certain death once before. She'd do so again for him, or Sam, without thinking twice. She's only recently discovered the supernatural world too, and, although she's quickly learning all she can about everything out there, sometimes her ignorance can be a major hindrance. Also, her inexperience in actually dealing with too many 'monsters' makes her vulnerable in ways that more experienced, seasoned hunters might not be.

S A M P L E S
Log Sample: The first time Charlie had found herself aboard the Tranquility, she had been in a constant state of fangirl delight. Who could blame her, though, for serious? The place was who's who of fictional heroes of hers. And okay, so there was the pesky fact that the ship seemed to like to eat people. Plus there was all the wonky, completely cray-cray things that happened to those who weren't being eaten or just straight-up disappearing, too. But still. The ship was a veritable melting pot of all things sci-fi and fantasy.
And she was beyond stoked to discover that hadn't changed in the slightest since she'd been gone.
Not that she remembered being gone. Well. No. It was more like she hadn't remembered being here when she went back home and, now that she was back, wasn't sure exactly how long that had been. Not that it mattered. It wouldn't take her too long to get up to speed with all the latest happenings. She'd just ask around, read a couple of the nifty information posts, and figure it out from there.
But first, she really needed pants. And a shirt would probably be helpful as well.
"You know," she muttered to herself as she set about searching for her locker, towel wrapped tightly around her goo-covered body, "for a spooky, possibly sentient, awesome murder!ship in space, you'd think the least it could do is leave clothes near the pods when we wake up. It's only polite."
Comms Sample: -video-
[The video cuts on to reveal a smiling redhead who looks a little too happy given the situation.]
So I gotta say, for a bunch of folks who've been kidnapped and are stuck on a creepy alien spaceship [a slight giggle here because seriously this is too freaking cool and why do the rest of you not see this?!?] you all are pretty organized. At first when I showed up I figured I'd probably spend the rest of, well, ever trying to figure out where I was and what was going on…
[A pause and she bites at her lower lip before looking a touch sheepish.]
Actually, that's not entirely true. First I figured that the Winchesters were somehow responsible because… Winchesters and come on, let's face it. Hanging with those guys is like playing a really creepy game of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. With monsters. And likely death. [The obviously fake smile is back.] But then I did a little digging and what do you know? Handy-dandy 411 posts, at your service! [A beat, as she draws a breath. She's still grinning brightly.] Really, you all, super impressed here. Oh! And I'm Charlie, bee tee dubs. Charlie Bradbury. For the record.
[The video feed cuts off then immediately flickers back on. This time, the feed is locked like whoa to Dean and Sam Winchester. Charlie's bright, perky, totally fake smile has been replaced with an authentic grin. She gives a little wave.]
Miss me, bitches?
